Re: Windows 10 Enterprise v1703 is ignoring the computername is unattend.xml

My images are set up with OOBE. Do you use Device Name Prompter in your template?

I'm guessing in my case if a computer is not in Landesk already it ignores what I type into the Device name Prompter. actually it could be ignoreing it wether its in the Landesk database or not. When I reimage a computer that is in Landesk we always name it the same so if it ignores what I type in and uses the name already in the database I wouldn't know it.

Think i'll test that. We did not have this prior to upgrading to version 2016.3 which uses a different interface for Device Name prompter.

Just reimaged a computer that was already in Landesk database and named it something different and it took the new name.

I always delete computers out of the management console before I image them.  I use the device name prompter and it inserts the correct name into the unattend and then injects it into the image.   That's why I'm wondering about Windows only processing the oobe part of the unattend.   I'm on the 2017 build of Endpoint manager.

Well I have found a nice little utility that seems t be doing the job well.

There are lot of updates to apply to a Server 2012 R2 base image and this tool seems to do a pretty good job of it.

Thanks for your suggestion.

Glad to hear you found a solution.

It's gotten worse now. HP EliteBook 850 G4 doesn't work at all Domain Accession. I tried all the tricks. It concerns only the latest models e. g. HP ProBook 650 G3, HP 400 G3.

One touch computer setup

Hey guys,

Just wondering how everyone else does their one touch computer imaging.  I'm getting started with this and would like to get to the point where the base image is laid down, drivers, then packages installed, name machine, join domain, add user account, wifi, printers, etc etc.  Been searching for a bit and not really seeing anything that points to these.

For the time being the OS is Windows 10 running on Dell Latitude hardware.  Anyone have links or tips on where to start would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

So

So I recreated the image using then sysprepped using this command:  Sysprep /generalize /oobe

It was based on this note:   https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/boot-windows-to-audit-mode-or-oobe

Note

If you install Windows images by using the Sysprep /generalize /oobe command, the user experience will not be ideal. On the next reboot after you run the Sysprep /generalize /oobe command, Windows runs the specialize configuration pass, Plug and Play, and other Setup tasks before Windows starts OOBE. This process can take additional time and can delay a customer's first logon.

I needed to make sure the specialize pass was processed, and this command facilitated that.  Using the GUI didn't seem to do the same thing.

The entire article is here.

provisioning actions are not retrieved and provisioning GUI is empty

Hi,

I am running on weird situation I never saw before. The Windows PE is loaded successfully and the startnet.cmd script is running until it reaches the step "A subdirectory or file \ldprovision already exist". Normally the provisionin GUI should start now but it is not the case. It will take too much time (more than 10 minutes) before it is displayed and the problem is it shown no provisioning actions.

I made a dummy template on which I have added just 1 provisioning action which is wait(xx). and I tried on the same device and I got the same behavior. I deleted the device and import it again and I am still seeing the same weird behavior.

I don't think that it is a general problem since some other devices were able to finish successfully provisioning tasks!!

From the core server I checked the follwing log files :

provisioning.log

VERBOSE ProvisioningWebService  3/12/2018 11:12:07 AM  : Identifiers to use - Mac Address: True, Serial Number: True, AMT GUID: True

VERBOSE ProvisioningWebService  3/12/2018 11:12:07 AM  :  Identifiers:

VERBOSE ProvisioningWebService  3/12/2018 11:12:07 AM  :   MACAddress: XXXXXXXXXXXX

VERBOSE ProvisioningWebService  3/12/2018 11:12:07 AM  :   SerialNumber: XXXXXXX

VERBOSE ProvisioningWebService  3/12/2018 11:12:08 AM  : Returning task XML

TemplateFinder.log

DEBUGGING TemplateFinder  3/12/2018 11:12:07 AM  : GetProvisioningTaskForComputer.computerIdn 11334

VERBOSE TemplateFinder  3/12/2018 11:12:07 AM  : info.taskId 7255.info.templateId 226

==> since it is the right task ID and the right template ID I presume that the provisioing task (with the provisioning action wait(xx) was successfully retrieved by the core server).

From the client I can see that all prerequisite files were succesfully downloaded:

In the IIS log file I can see this traffic. But for the device that keeps failing I can't see any traffic related to certificate or serverauthentication.

One more thing, in the device that successfully started the provisioning task, the folder X:\cba8\cbaroot\broker there was .csr file + .Key file + proxy.state.xml + crt file but for the failed device this folder was empty.

Many community articles and conversation talks about borkerconfig.exe /r I tried it but without any success.

Could any one support me with this issue. I don't understand what is the role of brokerconfig.exe and why the device should apply for a certificate since I am not enabling client certificate-based feature and I don't have any blocked device.

I don't have the real explanation. After trying a lot of things, I analyzed the LOG files meticulously and checked every bug. From the several contributions, from different forums, I figured out a solution together.

The problem is the UNATTENT. XML file. We have a variable in the TAG <ComputerName>. The value of the variable is read from the database. So far, everything is correct. Only Windows does not play along and causes an error.

As soon as I delete the variable from the TAG, everything works fine.

No Boot Device Found after exiting WinPE

When Imaging machines with UEFI enabled i am running into a problem after rebooting from WinPE. the first reboot does not see the hard drive. If you check BIOS before it attempts to boot there is not option for the hard drive or windows boot manager under the UEFI options. After it fails to boot, BIOS then registers the harddrive and the machine will boot into windows and complete the OSD template.

... not sure why youre BIOS is not detecting the HDD, but that's a BIOS problem more than anything.

If the BIOS can't see it, then it doesn't matter whether the disk / partition is set to boot active or not -- won't happen, since BIOS can't see it.

You may want to try enabling some HDD-controller compatibility mode(s) potentially, to help you along (details vary based on vendor / hardware) // and / or poke your hardware OEM about any known issues / BIOS updates perhaps?

That's a few levels below what we can / do affect ourselves, normally .

Unfortunately, not through Ivanti EPM. Due to files being in use, we are unable to capture a Windows Image while it is currently running. You'd need to boot into the WinPE image included in EPM to capture the image.

Hello,

Apologies for the late reply.

We'd need more information from you to identify what the problem is. I assume the preferred server is set up correctly with the right credentials, correct? Have you attempted pointing the template directly at the preferred server as a test to see if it works in the first place? Is the image file in the exact same location on the preferred server as it is on the core? What does the maptopreferredhandler log say under X:/ldprovision while the device is in WinPE?

Thanks

Aaron

Joe, the document you cite explains the way how to do it right.

What is frustrating for me is that the quality of the service depends very much on the people who work on your ticket. I had two guys working on my issue, one couldn't find the problem, the other one saw it straight away.

Kathy,

I would guess that the hard drive in the surface is not detected. You can verify with Notepas in WinPE if you can see a local drive.

In this case you need to inject the mass storage drivers for the surface into the boot.wim / boot_64.wim files.

Windows Boot Manager appears after PXE Boot out of Provisioning Template

Some clients boot into the windows boot manager after booting them to WinPE through a provisioning template. I always need to press Enter to continue the boot process.

Has someone expirienced similar things? How can I skip this?

Cannot Join Domain or install Agent in Windows 10

Hello All,

I cannot seem to get my windows 10 images to provision correctly.

We use ImageX in our environment. When I capture the image I used Sysprep with OOBE.

However when deploying the image, the task seems to stop at "Configuring Target OS" and stays "working". There is a cmd window that appears for a split second and then the machine reboots and loads into Windows and stops at the log in screen. Once I log in nothing happens. In our windows 7 images, the task window would appear after log in and continue running, adding to the domain and installing the agent.

There is an LDprovisioning folder in the C drive, however when clicking any .exe the whole folder disappears.

If I boot the machine back into PXE, it loads up the task again and finishes configuring the target OS task, then fails the "Add to domain" and "configure agent" tasks.

Also of note, the Device name prompter does not actually change the name of the machine. The original image name is retained despite the task saying it succeeded.

Any ideas as to what I am doing incorrectly? This same process works great with our windows 7 images, however I did not build those and the employee who did is no longer here.
